Since the beginning of the week, the international airport on Martinique has suspended operations due to thick clouds of smoke and clashes between protesters and authorities. The unrest on the island has been fueled by growing discontent over rapidly rising food prices, which are currently 40% higher than in mainland France. Protesters have been setting up barricades, burning rental cars, and blocking key roads, significantly hindering movement across the island.

Economic Crisis and Local Reactions

The primary cause of the current unrest is the high cost of living, making life increasingly unbearable for residents. One protester voiced their frustration, saying, "A tiny salad costs two euros! How am I supposed to live with such prices?" Videos circulating on social media show police cars being forced to retreat as angry demonstrators hurl rocks and bottles at them.

Imposing a Curfew

In an effort to control the situation, the prefect of Martinique has introduced a curfew from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., banning all protest actions. However, residents are not ready to back down. One of them declared, "This is our home, and we will fight until the end! We've put up with it for long enough, and now things have spiraled out of control." This statement underscores the seriousness of the situation and the residents' determination to continue their struggle for justice.

Tourism and Next Steps

The escalation of protests has already led to the suspension of schools and port operations, as well as partial road closures, which could severely impact the island's tourism infrastructure. The government has scheduled further talks with citizens on Friday to discuss ways to stabilize prices. However, for now, tourists are advised to avoid travel to Martinique as the situation remains highly unstable.
