Malta welcomed a record number of tourists in 2023
Malta set tourism records for several key indicators in 2023. In particular, the country managed to increase the number of arrivals, stays, and total expenditures of tourists who came to Malta for vacation.
According to Michel Buttigieg, the representative of the Malta Tourism Authority in North America, in 2023 the country was visited by 55,096 tourists from the United States, which marked a significant increase of 35.6% compared to the previous year. This is reported by Travel And Tour World.
Buttigieg attributed this growth to the demand for cruise travel, as evidenced by the figures for the last quarter of 2023 when 82 cruise ship calls were made to Malta. During the same period in 2022, ships called Malta only 21 times. Given this positive trend, Buttigieg emphasized the importance of developing the country as a luxury tourist destination with a commitment to sustainable tourism practices.
Additionally, Carlo Micallef, Director General of the Malta Tourism Authority, emphasized the importance of marketing mechanisms in attracting high-net-worth sophisticated travelers and in making Malta attractive to such tourists. He assured of his commitment and intention to develop and rejuvenate the country's tourism sector.
Earlier, TravelWise reported that last year, Turkey's Sabiha Gokcen Airport welcomed a record 37.1 million travelers.
