Exceptionally low water on the Danube is disrupting summer cruises and sightseeing services in Hungary and Romania. The river’s flow in Romania fell to its lowest level since 1996 over the weekend, while Budapest came close to its previous record low. Several cruise vessels have been left waiting in ports, local sightseeing trips were suspended and Avalon Waterways cancelled a small number of departures on the Danube and Rhine.

Where Danube Cruises Are Being Disrupted

  • Hungary: Several cruise ships are waiting in Budapest and nearby ports
  • Sightseeing services: Trips north of Budapest have been temporarily suspended
  • Romania: River flow is less than half the usual July average and at its lowest since 1996
  • Cancellations: Avalon Waterways has cancelled a small number of Danube and Rhine departures
  • Forecast: Rainfall may gradually improve conditions in Romania
  • Before travelling: Ask the cruise operator about route, port or excursion changes

Prolonged heat and drought have reduced water levels across several European waterways, including the Danube and Rhine. In Hungary, MAHART-PassNave reported an 18% fall in July bookings after cancellations and suspended sightseeing services north of Budapest. Romania has also halted some ferry crossings, while exposed sandbanks and idle cargo barges show that the disruption extends beyond holidays to transport and agriculture.

Cruise disruption may affect access to riverside stops around Budapest and towns farther north along the Danube. Budapest’s Parliament building, Buda Castle and riverfront can still be visited independently, while places along the Danube Bend remain reachable by road or rail. Operators have not announced one response covering every sailing, so customers must confirm whether their itinerary, boarding port or planned excursions have changed.

Anyone due to sail in the coming days should monitor messages from the operator and avoid cancelling independently before receiving confirmation. Low water does not automatically mean the entire cruise will be called off; ships may wait, change ports or replace part of the journey with coaches. If a departure is cancelled, passengers should request written details of the refund, rebooking offer and any included travel arrangements.
