Imagine embarking on a train journey through landscapes so breathtaking they could be straight out of a fairy tale. Recently, a traveler named Chloe did just that, taking on one of the world’s most spectacular train adventures aboard the legendary TransAlpine train. This remarkable journey spans the stunning South Island of New Zealand, covering 223 kilometers each way in under five hours.

Starting from Christchurch, known as the Garden City for its beautiful parks and gardens, the train departs early on a crisp winter morning. As the journey begins, passengers find themselves in a spacious, air-conditioned scenic class carriage, offering expansive windows perfect for taking in the incredible views. The roomy seats and ample legroom make the trip comfortable, especially for taller travelers like Chloe's dad, Paul, who joined her on his first scenic train ride.

The journey across the Canterbury Plains is just the beginning. As the train ventures into the Southern Alps, passengers are treated to awe-inspiring vistas, including snowy mountain peaks and vast open spaces. One of the train’s highlights is the open-air viewing car, where passengers can step outside to fully immerse themselves in the fresh, crisp air while marveling at the surrounding scenery.

As the train passes through the historic Arthur’s Pass, passengers have a brief opportunity to step off and experience the rugged beauty of the Southern Alps up close. Arthur’s Pass, a high mountain pass, offers a glimpse into New Zealand’s rich natural landscapes, including alpine meadows, waterfalls, and even the occasional cheeky Kia bird.

The TransAlpine journey isn’t just about the scenery; it also offers a culinary experience that’s hard to match. On the return journey, Chloe and her dad upgraded to the Scenic Plus experience, a VIP-like service that includes gourmet meals and drinks, all served in an extra luxurious setting. The Scenic Plus car is equipped with a custom-built kitchen carriage, where chefs prepare hot and cold dishes using fresh, local ingredients sourced from the very regions the train passes through.

As the day turns into night, the train continues its journey back to Christchurch, offering one last chance to take in the views from the open-air carriage. The journey concludes with a delightful dinner, featuring dishes like horopito-rubbed chicken and caramelized Whitaker white chocolate cheesecake, perfectly capping off a day filled with stunning scenery and unforgettable moments.

For anyone looking to explore New Zealand in a unique and memorable way, the TransAlpine train offers an experience like no other. Whether you opt for the cozy Scenic class or indulge in the luxurious Scenic Plus, this journey through New Zealand’s South Island is a must-do for any travel enthusiast.
