IndiGo responds to viral cockroach video and takes action
A viral video showing cockroaches in the galley of one of IndiGo's planes shocked the public and forced the airline to take immediate action. After the insects were discovered, the cabin was disinfected.
A 20-second video posted on X, (formerly Twitter) by journalist Tarun Shukla shows two cockroaches spotted inside the storage area of the onboard galley. It is unclear whether the plane was in flight or on the ground.
The first footage shows something that looks like food waste. It is not known what kind of plane it was, but it was probably an Airbus A320, which make up the majority of IndiGo's fleet.
The airline recognized the problem and announced the disinfection of its entire fleet.
Hygiene in food preparation areas is of paramount importance for the safety and health of passengers. The viral video can be a cause for acute concern if the place where cockroaches were found is a food storage area before cooking or packaging
IndiGo assured that it is taking measures to maintain cleanliness and hygiene on board its aircraft.
"We are aware of the video that was shared on social media, which shows that one of our planes was not cleaned in a corner. Our employees promptly took the necessary measures on board. As a precautionary measure, we immediately cleaned the entire fleet and carried out fumigation and disinfection procedures," the company said in a statement.
This is not the first time that IndiGo has been complained about unsanitary conditions on board its aircraft. In 2023, a passenger filmed a cockroach crawling onto his tray.
As previously reported by TravelWise, last year hundreds of tourists who were unable to fly out of the country on time were put up in hotels with cockroaches and bedbugs.
