In-Flight Emergency: Passenger Opens Exit Door at 213 Meters Altitude
In May 2023, an alarming event caused turmoil among the passengers of an Asiana Airlines flight when a 32-year-old individual, named Lee, unexpectedly opened the emergency door of the plane during descent. The aircraft was about 213 meters above ground level as it approached Daegu from Jeju with 194 passengers onboard.
When the exit door suddenly swung open, those seated nearby were gripped with fear. Despite this resolution, the case did not conclude. Prosecutors demanded stricter punishment, arguing that Lee's behavior caused both physical injuries and psychological trauma to the passengers. In October 2023, Lee was sentenced to three years in prison, with the sentence being suspended for five years due to his mental health issues. In March 2024, prosecutors filed an appeal, asserting that Lee's mental condition did not fully justify his actions, which left 15 passengers traumatized. The case remains ongoing, with Lee currently on probation.
