Europe by Train: Which Rail Pass Do You Need?
Europe’s two main rail passes cover thousands of train journeys across 33 countries, but eligibility depends on where the buyer lives. Interrail is intended for European citizens and legal residents, while Eurail is sold to people legally resident outside Europe. Both use the same broad rail network, including participating services operated by companies such as Renfe in Spain, SNCF in France and SBB in Switzerland.

A Global Pass can be flexible, allowing travel on selected days within a month, or continuous travel for longer periods. On each activated travel day, the holder may take multiple included trains. A standard pass is not a guaranteed seat: reservations remain compulsory on many high-speed, night and popular services, particularly in France, Italy and Spain, and these can add a notable amount to the final cost.
The passes can connect major destinations without separate tickets for every journey. A week of travel could combine Zurich, Lucerne, Milan and Florence, while a Benelux itinerary can link Amsterdam, Brussels and Luxembourg. Nordic passes cover Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland, making Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm and Helsinki easier to combine. The network also reaches Great Britain, Ireland, Türkiye and several Balkan countries.
A rail pass works best when the itinerary includes several long journeys or plans may change. It is not automatically cheaper than advance tickets, especially when compulsory reservations are added. Before buying, travellers should price the intended trains separately, check whether reservations are available and confirm that every operator is included. Booking popular high-speed and overnight services early can prevent a valid pass becoming useless on a full train.
