On Sunday, 8 September, Edinburgh saw the official launch of its first fully electric double-decker buses, marking a significant milestone in the city's journey towards greener public transport. Operated by Lothian, these buses have now begun servicing routes 8 and 9, providing a quieter and more eco-friendly option for travelers navigating the Scottish capital.

For visitors to Edinburgh, the introduction of these electric buses has already made a noticeable impact. With spacious seating for over 70 passengers, along with Wi-Fi and USB charging points, these buses have enhanced the overall travel experience. Tourists can now enjoy a more peaceful journey through the city’s iconic landmarks, with the reduced noise levels contributing to a more relaxed atmosphere.

These new electric buses also provide convenient access to several key attractions across the city. Route 8 passes through the historic Royal Mile, where travelers can explore Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Route 9 takes visitors near the bustling New Town area, home to the National Gallery of Scotland and Princes Street Gardens. Both routes offer easy access to Edinburgh’s popular sights, allowing travelers to explore the city in an environmentally friendly way.

The shift to electric vehicles is part of Edinburgh's broader commitment to reducing its carbon emissions, aligning with Scotland's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2035. Environmentally conscious travelers can take comfort in knowing that their use of public transport is helping the city move toward these ambitious climate targets, offering a sustainable way to explore Edinburgh’s attractions.

The necessary charging infrastructure has already been installed at Lothian’s main bus depots, allowing the fleet to operate efficiently with just a few hours of charging needed per bus. As the city continues to develop its electric transport network, travelers can look forward to more sustainable options when visiting Edinburgh in the future.

The rollout of these electric buses has provided tourists with a cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable way to experience the city's historic sites, reflecting Edinburgh's forward-thinking approach to public transport.
