The DiscoverEU initiative will return in 2026, offering more than 40,000 free travel passes for young people who want to visit different parts of Europe. The programme is part of Erasmus+ and gives participants the chance to see new places, learn about local traditions and travel independently. It also supports connections between European countries by encouraging young people to experience daily life across the region. Participants can experience different traditions, architecture, food and artistic heritage across the continent, using mainly rail transport as an environmentally responsible travel option.

Applications are open to young people born between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2008. Successful candidates can travel for up to seven days within a one-month period between 1 July 2026 and 30 September 2027. The initiative is available to citizens and residents of EU Member States, Overseas Countries and Territories linked to the EU, as well as partner countries participating in the Erasmus+ programme, including Iceland and Türkiye.

The programme also marks 40 years since the creation of the Schengen area, which allows movement across 29 European countries without internal border checks. According to the European Commission, DiscoverEU helps young people learn more about life in different European countries and meet people of their age from other backgrounds. For many participants, this is the first time travelling on their own, which allows them to gain practical experience, become more independent and create contacts with people living in other parts of Europe.

Destinations Highlighted by DiscoverEU

  • Cork, Ireland – European Capital of Culture
  • Valletta, Malta – historic cultural centre
  • Lyon, France – recognised for accessibility initiatives
  • Various European cities known for architecture, art and cuisine

These routes make it easier to reach cultural centres recognised for their heritage and inclusive travel environment. Participants can also receive a discount card providing reduced prices on transport, accommodation, attractions, sports activities and food services across participating destinations.

The programme allows young people to plan trips that combine learning with real travel experience. Participants can choose their own routes and may travel with friends who meet the same eligibility rules. Starting international travel at a younger age can help young people get to know different parts of Europe, meet people from other countries and see how daily life, traditions and habits vary across the continent.
