As summer approaches and people book their holidays, North Macedonia is becoming a popular option for those looking to escape the crowds. This landlocked country in Europe, bordered by Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Albania, is perfect for those seeking a peaceful trip off the beaten path.

North Macedonia, rich in history and culture, is influenced by the Mediterranean, Balkans, Greece, Italy, and the Ottoman Empire. This blend of cultures makes it one of the continent's most unique and lesser-known holiday destinations.

The country is a hidden gem, covered in beautiful natural scenery. Approximately 80% of North Macedonia is made up of mountains and lakes, making it ideal for adventure lovers. Activities such as hiking, cycling, and kayaking are popular among visitors. For those who prefer observing nature, the country boasts a wide variety of wildlife, including bears, wild boars, wolves, foxes, deer, and over 200 species of butterflies.

History enthusiasts will enjoy exploring amphitheaters, statues, monasteries, and ruins from the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman eras. The rich historical tapestry of North Macedonia also contributes to its diverse and delicious cuisine. The national dish, tavče gravče, a savory baked bean dish, reflects the country's culinary heritage.

One of North Macedonia's highlights is Lake Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage site. While this area can get busy during peak summer times, the rest of the country remains relatively unexplored, offering a tranquil escape for travelers.

Despite its size, North Macedonia offers a wealth of experiences. From the stunning landscapes of Matka Canyon to the cultural richness found in cities and towns, visitors can enjoy a variety of activities and sights. The recent rise in tourist numbers indicates that more people are discovering this hidden gem.

In 2021, North Macedonia welcomed 294,000 visitors, a stark contrast to neighboring Greece's tens of millions. This emerging destination, with its similarities to Greece and Turkey, is perfect for those craving adventure and less frequented by tourists.
