China Eastern Expands Free Inflight Wi-Fi Across Domestic Widebody Fleet

From 1 January 2026, China Eastern Airlines will roll out free inflight Wi-Fi on all domestic services operated by widebody aircraft, excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan routes. First and business class passengers will receive complimentary high-speed internet, while economy class travellers will have free access to a standard Wi-Fi package. Paid upgrades will remain available for higher bandwidth needs.

Until now, China Eastern’s free Wi-Fi has been available only on selected Air Express routes. From 2026, the service will be offered on all domestic flights operated by widebody aircraft, significantly widening its reach. At the same time, the airline has simplified how passengers get online. The new system opens the authentication page automatically, so travellers no longer need to enter a website address or wait for a manual redirect when connecting.

The free standard Wi-Fi in economy class is suitable for basic internet use. Passengers can send text messages, open websites, browse social media, check stock prices, and read or reply to work emails during the flight. Travellers who make voice calls, take part in video meetings, watch online videos, shop on websites, or play games can pay for an upgraded package that offers higher speeds and a connection that works more reliably.

Wider Wi-Fi access also reshapes how domestic journeys within China can be used. Business hubs such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen become easier to manage during short and medium-haul flights, while leisure routes to cities like Chengdu, Xi’an, Kunming, or coastal destinations allow travellers to stay connected while planning onward trips, bookings, or local activities before landing.

This change follows a clear path the airline has been taking for several years. China Eastern has been expanding inflight connectivity since 2023, keeping Wi-Fi available even below 3,000 metres and gradually extending free access to more cabin classes on Air Express flights. The 2026 update makes onboard internet a normal part of domestic widebody travel, shaping what passengers can reasonably expect when flying within China.
