Cancun International Airport Eliminates 19% Fee on Multiple Laptops
Cancun International Airport has officially removed its long-standing fee that charged tourists for bringing more than one laptop or similar device into Mexico. Effective immediately, visitors can now bring multiple computers without facing the previous 19% duty that was applied to any additional devices beyond the first.
The tax, which previously shocked many tourists arriving at Cancun, often resulted in hefty bills—sometimes reaching hundreds of dollars. Those unable to pay the fee were prevented from entering Mexico with their extra devices, creating a poor first impression for travelers. The fee primarily affected remote workers and tourists bringing multiple electronic devices for leisure or work purposes.
Governor Mara Lezama of Quintana Roo announced the change, acknowledging the negative impact the fee had on the airport's reputation. While the rule had been inconsistently enforced across Mexico, Cancun’s removal of the duty is seen as a welcome improvement for travelers.
Although Cancun has lifted this fee, it remains unclear whether other Mexican airports will follow suit. Travelers are still advised to carry their laptops as part of their hand luggage to avoid complications at customs.
