On June 6, two passengers were arrested at Cape Town International Airport (CPT) following a security threat involving a FlySafair flight. The South African Police Service (SAPS) Bomb Squad was deployed to the scene, leading to the disembarkation of passengers and crew for a thorough aircraft sweep.

The Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) confirmed the deployment of the Bomb Squad on Thursday evening. The threat was managed by SAPS and other law enforcement agencies, with the airport and airline management ensuring all aviation safety protocols were followed. FlySafair Flight FA102, bound for Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport (JNB), was delayed for over five hours due to the incident. The aircraft, a 21-year-old Boeing 737-800, was eventually cleared and declared safe.

The security threat was reportedly triggered by comments made by two passengers onboard the flight. These passengers were arrested, and the matter is currently being handled by SAPS. FlySafair has not provided further comments on the incident.

Operations at Cape Town Airport have returned to normal as of June 7. Affected passengers were rebooked and safely reached their destination. FlySafair Flight 102 departed Cape Town at 22:44 and arrived in Johannesburg at 00:25. The swift response ensured the safety of all involved, with detection dogs and security personnel playing crucial roles.

Mark Maclean, ACSA Regional General Manager Cluster 2, praised the efforts of SAPS and Aviation Security (AVSEC) in managing the threat. He highlighted the importance of effective incident management and security collaboration, emphasizing that safety and security are never compromised. This incident serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of making dangerous or reckless comments at an airport.

In a separate incident on the same day, a 70-year-old alleged drug mule was arrested at Cape Town International Airport. The suspect was found with $32,000 (R600,000) worth of crystal methamphetamine in a hidden compartment in his luggage. The arrest was made by SAPS’ Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), known as the Hawks. The suspect is scheduled to appear at the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on June 10.
