Starting from the summer holidays of 2025, families planning trips to Amsterdam will have a fantastic opportunity: children aged 4 to 11 can travel for free on GVB buses, trams, and metros for 1.5 years. This initiative, supported by the city authorities, allows children and their parents to navigate the city and explore different areas without additional costs. The program, funded through the city's budget, will continue until the end of 2026, making it a useful option for vacation planning.

This opportunity is not only convenient for local residents but also beneficial for tourists traveling with children. The program has already proven its success, with over 17,000 children taking advantage of free transport last year, making nearly a million trips. To access free travel, parents need to apply through the city’s official website. When planning your visit to Amsterdam, be sure to consider this perk for convenient and cost-effective public transportation.

This initiative is part of Amsterdam's broader efforts to transform into a more sustainable and traveler-friendly city. Amsterdam is making significant changes to reduce car traffic, creating more space for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transportation. Travelers can benefit from these improvements: public transport for children under 11 is free during certain periods, and shared bikes are widely available thanks to new pilot programs. Streets like Van Woustraat are now car-free, offering safer and more enjoyable conditions for walking and cycling, making it easier to explore the city.

Since December last year, many areas have had a speed limit of 30 km/h, enhancing safety for everyone, including visitors. Over 7,000 parking spaces have been removed, with the freed-up areas transformed into green spaces, perfect for relaxing or spending time with children. In the Wallen district, deliveries are now conducted via waterways, making strolls along the canals more peaceful and enjoyable. Amsterdam is evolving into a cleaner, safer, and more visitor-friendly destination, offering a pleasant experience for all travelers.

Thanks to its family-friendly initiatives and commitment to sustainable development, Amsterdam continues to enhance its appeal as a premier travel destination. The combination of free public transport for children, safer streets, car-free zones, and green spaces makes the city an ideal choice for both families and individual travelers. Whether exploring vibrant neighborhoods, cycling along scenic routes, or strolling beside peaceful canals, Amsterdam offers a unique and enjoyable experience that prioritizes both convenience and environmental consciousness.
