Tourism is recovering at a frantic pace after the pandemic. In this regard, some popular destinations are once again under pressure from overcrowding.

As a result, some resorted to the introduction of a "tourist tax" last year, and others followed suit in 2023, Euronews reports.

Where the tourist tax is being introduced

Barcelona's tourist tax will be increased over the next two years, city officials have announced. Since 2012, guests of the Catalan capital have been required to pay both a regional tourist tax and an additional citywide tax. On April 1, 2023, the city authorities raised the municipal fee to 2.75 euros. The second increase will take place next year on April 1, when the fee will rise to 3.25 euros.

Valencia has also announced the introduction of a tourist tax for travelers. It will come into force in late 2023 or early 2024. Visitors will have to pay from 50 cents to 2 euros per night, depending on the chosen accommodation for up to seven nights.

Olhão, a Portuguese fishing town popular with tourists, has started charging visitors €2 per night from April to October.

From November to March, the tax will be reduced to 1 euro. It will not apply to children under the age of 16 and will be limited to five nights - that is, a maximum of 10 euros - per trip.

Thailand is introducing a tourist tax of 300 baht (8 euros). It was originally expected to come into effect at the end of 2022, but a lack of clarity on how it will be implemented has led to delays.

Starting in 2024, Venice will start charging tourists per day.

The fee has been repeatedly postponed, but a 30-day trial looks set to finally take place next spring and summer. The exact dates have not yet been confirmed.

Starting in 2024, non-EU citizens, including Americans, Australians, Brits, and other travelers from outside the Schengen area, will need to fill out a €7 application. Those under 18 and over 70 will not have to pay the fee.

The scheme was supposed to be in place by November 2023, but has faced delays related to the EU's new entry/exit system (EES).

Where the tourist tax is already in effect

Austria

In Austria, you pay an overnight tax, which depends on which province you are in. In Vienna or Salzburg, this means an additional 3.02 percent of the hotel bill per person.

The tourism tax is also known as Tourismusgesetz and Berherbergungsbeiträge.

Belgium

The tourism tax in Belgium is also charged to the accommodation for each night of stay.

The fee is sometimes included in the price of the hotel room, but some separate the cost and make it an additional charge, so you need to check your bill carefully.

Antwerp and Bruges charge a per-room rate. The price in Brussels depends on the size and rating of the hotel. In general, it is about 7.50 euros.

Bhutan

While tourist fees in most countries are less than 20 euros, the tax in Bhutan is relatively high.

The minimum daily fee for most foreigners is: 250 USD (228 EUR) per person per day in high season and slightly less in low season. But it covers many services, including accommodation, transportation in the country, a guide, meals and entrance fees.

Bulgaria

Bulgaria has an overnight tourist tax. It is very low and varies depending on the area and hotel classification - up to about 1.50 euros.

Caribbean islands

On most Caribbean islands, tourist taxes are added to the hotel rate or check-out fee.

The fee ranges from 13 euros in the Bahamas to 45 euros in Antigua and Barbuda.

Croatia

Croatia increased its tourist tax in 2019. However, the increased rate only applies during the peak season in summer.

Visitors pay about 10 kuna (1.33 euros) per person per night.

Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic, you need to pay a tourist tax only when visiting the capital city of Prague. It is very small (less than 1 euro) and is paid per person per night, up to 60 nights. The tax does not apply to children under 18 years of age.

France

In France, there is a "seigneurage tax". It is added to your hotel bill and varies depending on the city you are staying in.

Prices range from 0.20 euros to about 4 euros per person per night.

Germany

Germany has a "culture tax" (a kulturförderabgabe) as well as a "bed tax" (a bettensteuer) in cities such as Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Berlin.

The fee is about 5 percent of your hotel bill.

Greece

The tourist tax in Greece depends on the number of hotel stars or the number of rooms you rent. It can be anything up to 4 euros per room.

It was introduced by the Greek Ministry of Tourism to help reduce the country's debt.

Hungary

In Hungary, the tourist tax is charged only in Budapest. Travelers must pay an additional 4 percent of the room rate each night.

Indonesia

Indonesia's tourist tax is levied only in Bali. In 2019, a new law stipulated that foreign visitors to the Indonesian island must pay a fee of 9 euros.

It is reported that tax revenues go to programs that help preserve the environment and Balinese culture.

Italy

The tourist tax in Italy depends on where you are. Venice may introduce its own tax in the summer of 2022.

Meanwhile, the fee in Rome ranges from 3 to 7 euros per night depending on the type of room, but some smaller cities charge more.

Japan

In Japan, it is declared in the form of an exit tax. Visitors to Japan pay 1000 yen (about 8 euros) when they leave the country.

The official tourism website claims that this small tax has a "significant impact" on the economy.

Malaysia

The tourist tax in Malaysia is a flat rate and is charged per night of stay. It is no more than about 4 euros per night.

New Zealand

Many tourists, people on working vacations, and some students and workers who come to New Zealand have to pay the International Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) when they arrive.

This is 35 New Zealand dollars, which is approximately 21 euros.

Netherlands

The Netherlands has a tourist tax on land and a tax on water tourists. In Amsterdam, it currently amounts to 7 percent of the hotel room rate. This is called toeristenbelasting.

In 2024, it will increase to 12.5 percent, making it the highest tourist tax in Europe.

Portugal

Portugal's low tourist tax is paid per night per person and applies only to guests aged 13 and older.

It is about 2 euros and is currently applied in 13 of Portugal's 308 municipalities, including the cities of Porto, Lisbon, and Faro.

You only have to pay for the first seven days of your stay.

Slovenia

The tourist tax in Slovenia depends on the location and rating of the hotel. It is slightly higher in major cities and resorts, including Ljubljana and Bled - about 3 euros.

Spain

If you are traveling to Ibiza or Mallorca, you will have to pay a tourist tax.

The sustainable tourist tax, which applies to holiday accommodation on the Spanish Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera), also applies to every vacationer over the age of 16.

In high season, the tax can reach 4 euros per night.

Switzerland

The tourist tax in Switzerland depends on the location. The cost is indicated per night and per person and is approximately 2.20 euros.

Accommodation prices usually do not include the tourist tax - it is indicated as a separate amount, so it is easier to track.

And this only applies to stays of less than 40 days.

USA

A hotel tax or lodging tax for travelers who rent a home is charged in most states. It is also called a lodging tax.

The fee is charged at hotels, motels, and inns. The highest rate is reportedly paid in Houston, with a 17 percent tax on the hotel bill.
