A tourist from America was forced to wear only a coat for eight hours: what was the reason?

An American tourist claims she was dressed only in a coat for almost eight hours after finding a bedbug in a hostel in Edinburgh. Julie Ping Luu says she was staying at St. Christopher's Inn Edinburgh Original near the capital's Waverley Station when she claimed to have been awakened by bed bugs crawling all over her.

The 42-year-old traveler said that the staff did not believe her at first until she pulled out a photo of the insects. After that, she asked to use the washing machine to clean all her clothes. This was reported by edinburghlive.co.

However, the marketing administrator was allegedly forced to do two washes in the staff washing machine, each of which took four hours, leaving her with only her coat on for eight hours. She waited almost naked in a cold reception area.

Julie also claims that she reported the incident to the hostel manager the next day, who was "defensive" and said that the hostel was regularly burglarized. Despite this, Julie said she received compensation for the traumatic experience but soon moved to another hostel in the city.

"When I was planning my trip, I wasn't sure how long I was going to stay, so I only booked two nights there. When I decided to stay for the third day, it was fully booked for Wednesday, so I looked for another hostel and chose St. Christopher based on location and price. St. Christopher was a disappointment. The dorm room was overcrowded and messy, with people's belongings and some trash everywhere. I was so tired from the day's wanderings that I just threw everything on the bed and fell asleep," says the tourist.

Julie adds that she didn't check her bed before going to bed, and in vain.

"I woke up at about 12 o'clock in the morning feeling itchy. I jumped out of bed, I'm paranoid because of all the stories I've heard about bed bugs in Europe. Then, since everyone else was asleep in the room, I used my flashlight to inspect the bed and found a huge surprise on the blanket," Julie adds.

Then the traveler threw all her things into a metal locker and ran to the front desk to tell them.

"The first guy I talked to wasn't very nice. He didn't believe me; he said it was impossible because they clean and fumigate. When I showed him the photo, he and his colleague finally came over to check, and I followed them to get my things. They went up first, while another colleague gave me another room (another dormitory in the building across the street)," says Ping Luu.

Later, the tourist asked about washing her clothes and was told that the hostel's laundry room was broken.

"I kept saying that I needed to wash and dry my clothes immediately, but they said that everything was closed. Later they gave me a small washing machine that I could use (but not a dryer). So, I was cold, hungry, sleepy, tired and angry, sitting at the reception of this hostel, waiting for my clothes to be washed," Julie says.

The tourist claims that she then had to wait exhaustingly for her clothes,

"After a couple of hours, I picked up my clothes and went to the new dorm they gave me. There I hung my clothes on the radiators as best I could and checked my new bed for bugs. This dormitory was much nicer than the first one. The bedding looked clean, so for the first time I sat down a little calmly and slept restlessly for a while, sitting up straight," the traveler said.

The traumatized traveler has now taken to social media to warn others to check for bedbugs in their hostels. The post received hundreds of likes and comments as many stunned travelers were shocked to learn of Julie's ordeal.

One person wrote: "Well, this will make a great travel war story someday. Are you sure it was a bed bug and not just a bed bug? They are so small it's hard to see."

Another said: "I don't know what to expect in terms of compensation, but even the best five-star hotels can have bed bugs, so I agree that it would be unwise to judge based on the fact that it's a hostel."
