A record year for Miami Airport: over 52 million passengers in 2023
Miami International Airport had a successful year in 2023, handling more passengers and cargo than ever before.
According to FloridaPolitics, the airport served 52.3 million passengers, marking a 3.2% increase from the previous annual record. This growth was mainly driven by international travel, which saw a significant 8.5% increase with 23.2 million passengers.
American Airlines, the leading carrier, accounted for the majority of passengers with 31.4 million travelers. The total number of seats increased by 10% during the winter schedule.
Miami Airport also welcomed flights from several new carriers, including Volaris El Salvador, Norse Atlantic Airways, and Porter Airlines, bringing the total number of passenger and cargo airlines to 96 by the end of the year, the highest among all US airports.
Cargo traffic also saw a 1% increase, reaching a new high of 2.78 million tons, up from 2.7 million tons the previous year.
The airport administration expects growth to continue this year, with American Airlines introducing new routes to Havernors Harbor, the Bahamas, and Jamaica, and low-cost foreign carriers like Condor Airlines, LEVEL, and Viva Aerobus making their debut.
Miami Airport is also investing significantly in capital improvements, including a $7 billion capital improvement program to modernize the transportation center over the next five years and a $1.7 billion Modernization in Action plan to maintain and upgrade vehicles, infrastructure, facilities, and Skytrain.
Additionally, a groundbreaking $136 million renovation of a new garage will add 2,200 spaces for travelers and employees. Other upgrades include overhauls of all airline ticket counters between Concourses F and H, new biometric boarding technology at all 60 exits in Concourse D, renovations to 30 bathrooms and 10 passenger boarding bridges, and refurbishment of 38 elevators, escalators, and moving walkways.
