A New Horizon in Sustainable Travel: Launch of the WSTHA 2024 Program
The World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards (WSTHA) officially opens its doors to entries for its inaugural 2024 program, inviting individuals and organizations globally to showcase their contributions towards sustainable travel and tourism. This initiative marks a significant milestone in promoting sustainability across the sector, with a free entry process encouraging widespread participation.
Spanning 21 categories, the awards program reflects the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a net positive framework focusing on People, Planet, Place, Prosperity, and Partnerships. An Advisory Board comprising experts in sustainable travel has curated these categories to encapsulate the essence of sustainability in the travel and hospitality industry.
The selection process involves a meticulous analysis by students from the Nova School of Business and Economics in Lisbon, with the WSTHA Advisory Board finalizing the shortlist. This approach not only ensures a rigorous evaluation process but also engages the academic community in the sustainable travel movement.
Key milestones for participants include a submission deadline on 24 May, followed by a global voting phase among travel and tourism professionals from 14 June to 2 August. The anticipation culminates in the WSTHA Gala Ceremony in Belize on 27 September, where leaders in sustainable travel will gather to celebrate the winners.
Belize, the Official Host Destination for the WSTHA 2024, embodies the spirit of responsible tourism. Its commitment to sustainable practices, from rainforest conservation to reef preservation, makes it an ideal backdrop for this prestigious event. Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism for Belize, expressed enthusiasm for the program, encouraging submissions that highlight leadership and innovation in sustainable travel.
The WSTHA program is a collaboration with the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, representing a global network of hotels and hospitality partners dedicated to sustainable practices. Glenn Mandziuk, CEO of the Alliance, emphasized the industry’s collective effort towards a Net Positive future and the importance of showcasing these achievements through the awards.
