A herd of European bison spotted in Ukraine (VIDEO)
The largest number of European bison was recorded in western Ukraine, in the Lviv region. The herd consists of 114 animals. The animals live on the territory of the Brody Forestry Fund of the Carpathian Forestry Office.
Most of the animals belong to the Bialowieza subspecies, which is the largest in terms of linearity and weight among the entire Bison genus, the state enterprise Forests of Ukraine reports on its Facebook page.
"The size of the main herd depends on the conditions and needs of the animals. It is also influenced by the quality care of specialists, security, watering, feeding, and all biotechnical measures. There are also natural factors: aging of bison, natural mortality," the post says.
Wild bison were brought to the Lviv region in the 80s from Lithuania in the number of 12 individuals. Now, according to recent estimates by foresters, there are 114 of them.
Today, there are about half a thousand bison in Ukraine. The implementation of the action plan for the conservation of these animals will help increase their number in the country.
