A flock of piranhas feasts on caiman: the video amazed users
A flock of piranhas feasting on a dead caiman was caught on camera.
The video was posted on Instagram on the @natureismetal page. It shows several fish scurrying at breakneck speed around the body of a dead caiman, an alligator-like reptile, in a river in the Amazon rainforest.
"Piranhas are often portrayed in movies as man-eating fish, but the truth is they are more scavengers than hunters," the video's explanation reads, "Their diet consists mostly of insects, fish, crustaceans, worms, and the occasional caiman carcass. They are only dangerous to humans if they are provoked or starving."
So far, this video has garnered almost 160 thousand likes.
Piranhas are freshwater fish native to South America. It is believed that there are 30 to 60 species of piranhas, the largest of which, the red-bellied piranha, can grow to about 20 inches in length. They travel in groups of about 20 and are known for their razor-sharp teeth.
