Orkney is gearing up to welcome over 2,000 participants and officials from around the world for the International Island Games, which will be held from July 12 to 18, 2025. This is the largest sporting event ever hosted in Orkney and promises to be a true celebration of sport and culture.

History and Significance of the Island Games

The International Island Games is a multi-sport competition held every two years since 1985, when the first Games took place on the Isle of Man. Since then, the Games have been hosted by various island nations, including Bermuda, Gotland, Gibraltar, and Guernsey. The aim of the Games is to strengthen friendship and understanding between island communities through sports.

Orkney, an archipelago in northeastern Scotland, is known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Athletes from 24 island groups will compete in 12 sports, including archery, athletics, badminton, cycling, football, golf, gymnastics, lawn bowls, sailing, squash, swimming, and triathlon.

The UK's largest regional airline, Loganair, has become the official airline partner of the 2025 Island Games. The company will provide transportation for athletes and their supporters to Orkney, offering seven direct routes to Kirkwall Airport from various cities across the UK.
