Not Just a Suitcase: My Personal Checklist for Smart Travelers in 2025

February marks the start of preparations for a new travel season. Along with searching for the best flight deals, top hotels, and breathtaking destinations, it’s also time to think about travel gear.

Unfortunately, my most trusted suitcase has seen a little too much of the world. As I started looking for a replacement, I realized that buying an ordinary suitcase in 2025 is no longer an option—the world has moved forward in this area too!

So, let’s talk about what to consider when choosing luggage this year.

Why More Travelers Choose Carry-On Luggage

I travel often, and so do many of my friends. When I asked them what they look for in a suitcase, most of them said they prefer carry-on luggage. Minimalism is a trend, after all! But traveling light isn’t just about saving money—it’s about freedom, speed, and mobility.

When you spontaneously book a weekend in Paris, you won’t take a whole elephant with you. You pack travel-size versions of your favorite cosmetics, a couple of stylish outfits, and your laptop for remote work (because workations are a thing now!). And that’s it—you’re ready!

A carry-on means less time at the airport, always having your things with you, and not worrying about luggage fitting into the car trunk, whether you can lift it yourself, or—worst of all—what happens if your checked bag gets lost.

When You Need More Space

Of course, some travelers need extra luggage space. Parents traveling with kids? Of course, you can’t say no to bringing their favorite toy! Digital nomads traveling for months? Their entire life needs to fit into a suitcase.

In these cases, it’s crucial to choose a suitcase that protects your belongings. A high-quality suitcase isn’t just about size—it’s about durability, security, and peace of mind.

Suitcases Are a Fashion Statement

Aside from size, weight, and quality, most of my friends I asked for advice also focus on how a suitcase looks! And it makes sense—these days, a suitcase isn’t just a travel essential; it’s an accessory! We want it to match our style and reflect our approach to travel and life in general. Plus, let’s be honest—we all love capturing beautiful travel moments and posting airport stories that set the tone for the adventure ahead!

The Most Important Quality: Reliability

Most people I talked to said that reliability is one of the most important features in a suitcase. Travel is stressful enough with so many unknowns—you want to be sure of at least one thing: your suitcase won’t let you down.

You don’t want a wheel breaking off or a zipper failing at the worst possible moment. Your belongings—packed carefully and with love—should stay safe. Your laptop with that project you’ve worked on for two months? Protected. Your personal items? Secure. Even in the middle of a storm, a waterproof suitcase will keep your things dry and safe.

Innovation: The Future of Luggage

Personally, I love high-tech features. A suitcase with smart functions always catches my attention!

Did you know that modern suitcases now come with USB charging ports for your phone? Or built-in scales to prevent overpacking? Some even have trackers, so you can find your suitcase anywhere.

Sure, not all of these features will become everyday essentials, but some of them will change the way we travel—once we try them, we won’t want to go back!

Sustainability Matters

One last, but very important point for me: What happens to a suitcase when I no longer need it?

When it breaks or I simply want a new one, can it be recycled? I was thrilled to learn that some brands now produce suitcases from recycled plastic. Knowing that I’m not over-consuming, while still using a functional, stylish, and modern suitcase with a long history, is the best feeling.

My Favorite Luggage Brand

This is why I was so excited to discover Horizn Studios—a modern Berlin-based luggage brand. It’s not as widely known as American Tourister or Samsonite, but I fell in love with its philosophy.

  • Ultra-modern and tech-savvy
  • Minimalist and stylish
  • Eco-friendly—made from recycled plastic
